Summer courses, pros and cons 4

Jun11

York’s Keele campus during the summer is a strange place; oddly peaceful and kind of pleasant to sit outside in. Even the commute seems a bit shorter, though that just might be me. There are no line-ups in York Lanes or at Tim Hortons, and there aren’t the usual hordes of students underfoot. continue reading »

Study quirks 0

Jun10

Everyone has a method. Mine is rereading my notes ad nauseum, and condensing them into exam notes, that I then write and rewrite on, and then read and reread. It helps if I have absolute silence – music makes my mind wander, and having people around me makes me feel like talking instead of studying. I don’t really have any weird habits while I study, unless giving myself a scalp massage while I study is strange.

Anyway, I trolled the internet and found some truly special study habits: continue reading »

After the acceptance letter… 12

Jun9

I remember when I got my acceptance letter to York, I had this strange anti-climactic feeling - I had worked hard all through grade twelve and had finally gotten into the school that I wanted. I had chosen all my classes, and had nothing to do but enjoy the summer until September. Except I didn’t.  I had nothing to prepare for anymore. continue reading »

A few thoughts on roommates 1

Jun8

I wanted to write a post on roommates in university. But I’ve never had any.

So instead I compiled a list of celebrities who you may or may not know were roomies, and then did some research: continue reading »

I just found out what a VO2 max test is 2

Jun7

I didn’t know this, but according to this National Post article I came across about 20 years ago York’s kinesiology department was asked by NHL Central Scouting to come up with a standardized fitness test for all potential players. The entire process takes a week, and involves player interviews and complete medical evaluations. continue reading »

How to (try) to save money in university 0

Jun5

How to pay for my tuition without getting into debt has been an issue for me ever since my first year of university. OSAP is a double-edged sword – the money is available, but a mountain of debt awaits as soon as that diploma is in your hand. So, my parents and I worked out an arrangement: they would pay for half of my tuition and I would pay for the other half, each year. I was living at home, which meant that the money that I made from my part-time job went to my tuition, and not rent. I found it hard enough to pay off $2,500 on my own, so I can’t even imagine what it’s like for my peers who live on their own to pay off their entire tuition and food, and rent. For most of us, being a student is synonymous to being short on cash for four years, but there are a few ways to make the pinch more bearable: continue reading »

Should you go to grad school? Should you? 3

Jun4

An article I read in the Globe’s educational online section made me lose a bit of my morale regarding grad school. Quote from Lauren Friese, head of TalentEgg.ca and interviewee of article: continue reading »

The ‘good’ news 0

Jun3

We get the newspaper delivered to our house from Monday to Friday, and on the weekends my mom usually spends a good time of her day-off reading and watching news programs. I’m not a news junky like her, but there is a feeling of satisfaction and anticipation I get from sitting down in the morning with breakfast, coffee and a newspaper. Sometimes the news makes me laugh, the rest of the time it makes me anxious, suspicious and/or angry. continue reading »
