The McMun (McGill Model United Nations) conference for 2010 is under way in Montreal, and York University has 50 students representing the University. One of the highlights of every conference are the guest speakers that come talk to the student delegates. Guest speakers can range from politicians to corporate figures.
The guest speaker this year was Justin Trudeau. Justin Trudeau is a Canadian politician for the Liberal Party of Canada. Guest speakers are a treat for students because they encourage students to excel in their studies. It’s like your own personal pep talk, and it can do wonders for your self-esteem. The guest speakers touch upon current events, and elaborate on how the global community can help current situations. Justin Trudeau touched upon the current situation in Haiti and how we (the students) are able to help and make a difference. Students may think they are unable to make a difference because they are students and don’t have the power to change the world.
Justin Trudeau informed us that we can make a difference in the world, because we are young. If we want to see change in the world, then we have to embody the change that we wish to see. The future is in our hands today, not tomorrow. Encouragement from a figure like Justin Trudeau can encourage a student to achieve something they never thought possible.
York University will host its own conference on February 26th 2010, to February 28th. The guest speaker has not been released yet, and the excitement surrounding the event is becoming unbearable as the date draws near.
You can view the YMUN website here for full details on the club and the conference:

The Winters Wildhawks face-off againt District 5 in York Intramural Hockey playoff action.
Interuniversity Sports seem to get all the attention. The York Lions (in its various forms) usually dominate the York sports headlines, but you don’t need to be a York Lion to get involved with sports and recreation at York University.
Every year in intramural sport the colleges of York University square off to compete for the York Torch. The Torch is awarded for both participation and winning across all sports and divisions and has been coveted since 1966. It is big, it is shiny and it is prestigious!

High school field trips were one of my most favourite aspects of high school. Going somewhere new with a class to learn and experience new things was always fun. I am happy to report that this experience does not stop after high school. There are a lot of chances to leave campus and explore a new destination. continue reading »

The York Federation of Students set out to raise $15,000 in their $15,000 to Help the People of Haiti Campaign. We just visited their donation table in Vari Hall and learned that total donations have now hit over $20,000! The donation table will remain open so long as people keep donating – their new goal is to top $25,000. More information about donating (money or clothing) can be found at yfs.ca.
Donations are being collected to help the millions of people affected by the 7.3 magnitude earthquake that struck close to the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince on January 12, 2010. Tens of thousands may be dead and the nation is desperate for international support in the form of food, shelter, water and medicine.
All donations collected by the YFS are being donated to Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders). Donations will be matched by the York Federation of Students, which will be matched again by the Canadian government.
You can also follow the YFS campaign via Twitter and via Facebook.
